Friendliness starts with a smile
Friendliness costs nothing
Friendliness starts with a smile which costs nothing and can go a long way. I have heard stories of how a smile from a stranger or a kind gesture has changed their lives. All because of a smile.
Practising friendliness doesn’t mean having to be best friends with someone; it is just treating them how you would like to be treated – with courtesy and respect. Stranger or friend.
Staying connected
In current circumstances, the world is going through challenging times, and it is essential to stay connected. Are you staying connected externally and internally, with others, as well as with yourself?
Technology plays a major part in dividing us as well as uniting us. What has it done for you? Are you more or less connected to your family? You now have an opportunity to reconnect with those most precious to you.
Neighbours, colleagues and families are connecting and reconnecting on various levels right now. Everyone everywhere seems to be more connected now than prior to this COVID-19 situation.
Gifts from the heart
Friendship is a gift we give ourselves. The more you know someone, the more you understand that person and understand their behaviour at times that it may have confused you.
Getting to know someone is not hard; it just takes a little effort. Actually, all you need to do is just listen.
Listen without interrupting, by this I mean be aware of internal interruptions. Deciding on a response, and then sharing it, before your friend finishes what they have to share is something we all need to be mindful of.
Your mind interrupts conversations when thinking ahead and rather than listening with your two ears your brain is ready with a response – and it is usually about you, not them. Listening with your heart allows you to truly hear what is being said.
COVID-19 has provided an opportunity for reconnecting – with family, friends and even yourself.
Be your own best friend
Are you taking time out for yourself? Many people feel good if they have taken a walk, a jog or got out in the fresh air and sunshine if possible. Take a chair outside along with a book and something to drink.
Start journaling, colouring-in, or whatever it is that brings you joy. What would you recommend to a good friend who was in your situation with your thoughts and feelings running through their body?
It is an opportunity for stillness or activity. Do you need to declutter or use this time to do an online course? What brings you joy?
You make a difference
You impact the world more than you think. The people whose lives you impact could tell you how. Friendly people are friendly people, regardless of whether they are extroverts or introverts, meaning bubbly personalities or people who keep more to themselves.
Everyone makes a difference and contributes in some way. Friendliness is sincere; friendliness is kind; being friendly is important – the best way to get and keep a good friend is that you first must be one.
