Justice matters because it’s about fairness and what’s right in the world. Treating everyone equally and searching to find the truth, from all angles, is what makes justice matter.

Since you were born you were taught right from wrong. It’s only fair that people who did ‘wrong’ were reprimanded appropriately.

But what’s appropriate? An eye for an eye is what some people believe is fair. Others believe that everyone can be rehabilitated – but can they and are they? We’re all different and what works for one might not be just for the next person.

Does justice prevail?

Recently, I’ve seen a few things on television which have got me thinking. Lindy Chamberlain was all over the news in 1980 and was sent to prison.

Lindy was persecuted by the public who believe she killed her daughter although her family always stated she was innocent and that the dingo took her daughter.

Can you imagine knowing, with certainty, that a family member is completely innocent, having to go through the trial, expecting justice to prevail, and it doesn’t?

What’s the answer?

I don’t know what the answer is but I do believe that an answer will be found as we use our compassion, wisdom, thoughtfulness and work together to find the answer.

After watching a cold case being solved, which involved the murder of a mother and her children a person of authority stated that a large percentage of our police force end up with PTSD which stands for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

I recall thinking that our law enforcers life would be more affected, and for a longer period, than the person who committed the crime would be in prison. We have to come up with an answer that is best for all of us.

Not long ago, another matter I’ve become aware of is a young policeman from Melbourne, Australia who realised things could be better. He started a mentorship for troubled young men. It’s going national – and global. It’s getting massive results and when you see it works it has to be the pathway to the answer.

Every child, regardless of age, needs a role model, a mentor. If you have a child in your life then you’re it. I’m so glad you’re part of the answer and are focussing on building your character, one virtue at a time. Have a great week!

PARENTING TIPS

1. Have firm ground rules for the household but practice flexibility for different age groups.

2. Enforce consequences that are relevant to the misdemeanour.

3. Surprise yourself! Ask children what they think the consequences should be – you’ll find they may be harsher than you. But remember to discuss consequences before they are needed. This way everyone knows what the consequence is and has agreed upon them already.
