What thankfulness means is having an attitude of gratitude. Firstly you acknowledge in your mind how grateful you are about something. I’m thankful for being able to have a hot shower whenever I like; having the ability to take a walk in the sun, that leads me to be thankful for my health and that I can take a walk when I want to, the gorgeous weather outside, loving where you live and the beautiful surroundings; having a roof over your head, owning a reliable car that gets you from A to B, having a wonderful friend who supports you through good times and bad.
Where does thankfulness come from? Thankfulness comes from within. There are so many things to be thankful for. You feel an appreciation of, or for, something or someone. You can express it verbally to someone or be mindful of it just by acknowledging it internally, you may even express it physically through a gift, which doesn’t need to be big. A flower from a garden, buying someone a brownie or something else you know they’d appreciate.
You always find what you are looking for
Whenever you are feeling down think about what you are thankful for. Grab a paper and a pen and list 100 things. Once you start you’ll find you are on a roll.
Your day improves because you improve – your energy, your outlook, your attitude – your mental health!
The law of attraction is about what you think about comes your way so it’s important to be mindful of your thoughts and be aware that when you feel on a bit of a downer to change your thoughts because your thoughts determine your actions.
What does thankfulness look like?
When you are thankful you feel good about yourself, you are happier, you feel more content because you are grateful and appreciate what you have.
Everyone is happier when they think about what they do have in their life. When people start comparing themselves with others and feeling sorry for themselves, or more conceited because they have more, it’s never a good look.
A saying I remember hearing years ago was that if everyone in the world was asked if they wanted to swap places with someone else, after learning what each others problems were, nobody would want to swap. We’d all realise that our problems are what we are capable of handling, even though sometimes we are stretched a little. Things aren’t always as they seem. Be happy, and thankful, that you’re you.

PARENTING TIPS
1. Ask children to close their eyes and think of 3 or 5 things they are thankful for. Things they have in their life which makes their life happier. They can write a list or share it in a group setting – small or large.
2. Get a child to think about something that was difficult at some stage of their life (just in their head) and to think about what lesson it taught them that makes them stronger today. (Having a list of these character cards helps them).
3. Talk to a child about how they have the power to change their thoughts from negative to positive. For example when they are thinking negatively about something or someone (like another student) to think about the positive attributes of that student rather than the negative and how thinking kindly about someone helps create a more peaceful, safe, cooperative environment.
