Parenting is a whole new world! It’s exciting and it’s scary because there’s so much responsibility involved. It’s also one of life’s greatest joys.

Becoming a mum, or dad, is a life-long journey. Once you become a parent so many things change in your world. For the better and sometimes it’s not so good… because they can break your heart.

You learn to love in a way that you have never done before and although it’s a 24-hour role you just love it – most of the time!

Parenting is tough but it’s worth it and like any role in life it requires effort… yes, this means for the rest of your life.

There will be times when you wonder about the decisions you are making that impact you and your child.

You might lay awake at night wondering if you’ve made the right decision for them and most importantly, how you are going to help them make decisions for themselves as they grow.

I know I did.

As a parent for 30+ years I’ve discovered that there are things that I know now that I wish I knew as a young parent.

Parenting is hard. It’s tough. And so worthwhile when you get those precious moments that fill your heart with so much love and joy.

Like so many things in life when you understand the big picture the day to day things just fall into place.

After being a parent for many years and watching other parents from the sidelides, not to mention consuming heaps of books I realised there’s things I know now that I wished I knew in the early years of parenting.

Like you I had ideas of what was important and wanted the best for my child, and wanted to be the best parent I could be.

I had lots of information but needed to combine them all together in a way that made it easy and made sense.

I discovered there were more important things than what I thought was most important.

No wonder parents find themselves in situations they didn’t think they would be in and are unsure of how to handle.

As a result, I’ve discovered 9 essential components that I wish I’d known about from the very beginning.

One thing is raising kids who are self-aware and resilient. One way to do this is to help develop ethical foundations in your child by using words

that help them understand who they are so they are comfortable in their own skin.
