Responsibility – Characteristic / Virtue of the Week
Responsibility – Characteristic / Virtue of the Week
11-17 June 2018
Taking responsibility for your choices is a big, sometimes confronting thought. Although the beliefs and attitudes we have taken on may have come from our parents or other role models in our life, we are ultimately responsible for taking them on. Sometimes facing beliefs is difficult as well as eye-opening. Have you taken on beliefs of others without investigating for yourself?
Actions also speak to us about how much responsibility we have chosen to take on and whether or not we are happy to have put ourselves in certain positions. It is a wonderful feeling when we feel we can rely on others to be there for us when we need them and know that they will carry out whatever task respectfully agreed upon, whether it be in our personal or working life. The person we want to rely on most though is ourselves.
We help others feel good when they know they can rely on us to carry out actions that we have agreed to be responsible for – and we feel good when we have honored our word and feel even better when it is acknowledged – even if it’s only acknowledged by yourself.
We have a big impact on not just our own life, but the lives of others, by how we react to situations and people in challenging times or even everyday situations. This is a responsibility we have to ourselves, to our own sense of who we are, and who we wish to be.
The person we need to be most honest with is ourselves and once we have taken on that responsibility we set ourselves free – ironically taking on responsibility is empowering. Which area of your life do you want to empower?
Want to be a better person? Personal growth is a constant transformation – allow the Virtue of the Week to serve as a gentle reminder of who you are and who you want to be. Help create the world you want to live in – as you practice a virtue each week you also serve as a positive example to others and inspire others to do the same. Be the change you want to see in the world.
Actions to take to practice Responsibility:
● Every morning:
1. Read the card
2. If you feel the need take a few minutes to reflect on what it means to you right now
3. Trust that at the right time during the day this virtue will come to mind and you will know when to act on it
● Every evening:
1. Take a few minutes to reflect on how you applied this virtue in your life today
2. If you didn’t practice it, learn from your experiences by considering what you would do differently next time. If you did practice it then acknowledge yourself for doing so as it increases your self awareness and self confidence.
3. Acknowledge yourself when you do apply this virtue in your life. You will become more self aware and more confident within yourself.
