Determination – Characteristic / Virtue of the Week

When you are focussed on achieving a goal you are more likely to achieve it when you are single-focussed and remain steadfast in taking whatever action you need in order to achieve it.


Sure, the universe will test you now and then to see if it’s something you really want in your life and you know when something has your name all over it – the thought of what you want to achieve just keeps returning and you know that life isn’t going to be as fulfilling for you if you don’t continue to take a step in that direction.


There are times when you self-sabotage and do things that are not on your focus list, this is when you need to consider whether your whole being is in alignment with whatever it is you wish to achieve.


Every step forward is exactly that, it’s a step forward in the direction you want to go. It doesn’t matter how long something takes, it matters that you get there. Rather than critizise yourself for not being where you want to be, take the time to reflect on what it is you are doing, or not doing, that is holding you back. Learn from your experiences.


Take the step to get help, support or whatever it is you need to achieve your goal and be held accountable. Be mindful that when you have a goal you need to take action and that you also need to schedule time into your diary so you can move forward gradually, but surely.


Even though your day may not involve working all day towards your goal you can dedicate a set amount of time each day, or each week so that you keep moving forward until your goal is completed. As Lao Tzu once said ‘The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step’.

Want to be a better person? Personal growth is a constant – allow the Virtue of the Week to serve as a gentle reminder of who you are and who you want to be. Help create the world you want to live in – as you practice a virtue each week you also serve as a positive example to others and inspire others to do the same. Be the change you want to see in the world.


Actions to take to practice Determination:


● Every morning:

1. Read the card

2. If you feel the need take a few minutes to reflect on what it means to you right now

3. Trust that at the right time during the day this virtue will come to mind and you will know when to act on it

● Every evening:

1. Take a few minutes to reflect on how you applied this virtue in your life today

2. If you didn’t practice it, learn from your experiences by considering what you would do differently next time. If you did practice it then acknowledge yourself for doing so as it increases your self awareness and self confidence.

3. Acknowledge yourself when you do apply this virtue in your life. You will become more self aware and more confident within yourself.
